Ingredients
Scale
3 pounds apples (such as Gala, Fuji, or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and chopped
1/2 cup water
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional)
Instructions
Place the chopped apples and water into a large pot or Dutch oven.
Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat.
Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and cook for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are very soft.
Remove the pot from the heat. Stir in the cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice, if using.
Mash the apples with a potato masher for a chunky texture, or use an immersion blender for smooth applesauce. Blend until you reach your desired consistency.
Serve the homemade applesauce warm, or cool completely before storing.
Notes
For a smoother texture, cook the apples slightly longer until they break down more easily.
If you prefer a sweeter result, add 1 to 2 tablespoons of maple syrup or brown sugar during the last five minutes of cooking.
This recipe is great for meal prep; store cooled applesauce in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to one week.
