1 pound ground beef
1 pound ground turkey
1 large onion, chopped
2 (15 ounce) cans kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1 (15 ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained
1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained
1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
1 (4 ounce) can green chilies, undrained
1/4 cup chili powder
2 tablespoons ground cumin
1 tablespoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
Instructions
Brown the ground beef and ground turkey in a skillet over medium heat. Drain off any excess fat.
Transfer the cooked meat to your slow cooker.
Add the chopped onion, rinsed beans, diced tomatoes (with juice), tomato sauce, and green chilies to the slow cooker.
Stir in the chili powder, cumin, oregano, salt, pepper, and cayenne pepper, if using. Mix everything well.
Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours, or on high for 3 to 4 hours.
Stir the chili before serving.
Notes
For a thicker chili, remove the lid for the last 30 minutes of cooking time on high.
This recipe freezes well. Cool completely before portioning into freezer-safe containers.
Serve with your favorite toppings like shredded cheese, sour cream, or chopped green onions.
